' Two years ago when I began my coffee roasting project , it was in response to something I saw that changed my life. I attended an African children''s choir at a local church and was touched by the children singing. Each child was orphaned by the AIDs epidemic and was found living on the dangerous streets,, begging for food. The basics of having water, food, shelter, education and protection was unheard of to these children. Disease and abuse were rampant among them. Their painful stories made me feel that I wanted to do something to help. How do you begin to change a situation so desparate. I found out....... through education. Education is empowerment ! I did not have to look far for the perfect venue. An aquaintance of ours and an exceptional human and educator, Dennis DeGroot was inspired to build a school in Sierra Leone to teach the three Rs and HIV/AiDS awareness. Located in West Africa, Sierra Leone has a tragic history. It began by being the focal point for transatlantic human trade (African slaves). Civil war broke out in the 1990''s where war crimes and human atrocities ran wild.Sierra Leone is the lowest ranked country on the Human Development Index and seventh lowest on the Human Poverty Index,[18] suffering from endemic corruption[19] and suppression of the press. I want my coffee company to be so much more than just a source of good beans. Our price of coffee per pound beginning October 1st, 2009 will be one pound for $12 and further pounds after that $11. For every pound we sell, $1 will be donated to the Sierra Leone Project. Remember, our coffee is also sourced from farms that not only pay the coffee farmers well but also provide them with education, machinery, funding and business management support.I believe our little coffee company is growing into a transglobal project that is assisting those less fortunate . Imagine giving so much support to farmers as far away as Ethiopia,Peru, Sumatra....while educating children in Sierra Leone by simply purchasing the freshest, purest coffee possible! Please join our passion and make a difference!
